Sister’s Freshman Reflection

Sahar Alam

Stony Brook University’s esteemed STEM academic courses, research opportunities, and scholarships were primary factors for my decision to attend. I was also very excited that Stony Brook also had a strong Muslim community. When I moved in to Stony Brook, my parents stayed until 8:00 p.m. because the next day, they were going to Hajj for the first time. There were a lot of new experiences occurring within the first few days of my college experience. The first two weeks were challenging for me. I felt very alone and I was trying to adjust to this new chapter of my life. I would go to the Mosque to find sanctuary and to clear my mind. The first two people I met were Anika and Mehreen. They were extremely welcoming and they made me feel like I was not alone. Growing up, I did not have a strong Muslim youth community where we could connect and encourage each other. The first Women’s Halaqah was extremely successful and motivating; I hope to strengthen my faith as I continue to progress in my academic career. I feel so blessed that at Stony Brook we have an influential and supportive community of Muslims. InshaAllah, I hope the Muslim Students’ Association will continue to grow and inspire others.
